JERUSALEM (JTA) — An Israeli Arab from eastern Jerusalem was shot and killed by Israeli soldiers after running a checkpoint near Bethlehem.
The driver accelerated his car and ran through the checkpoint Tuesday morning after ignoring soldiers’ calls to stop and undergo a security check, according to an Israeli army spokesman.
Israeli soldiers found the car in a nearby gas station. The driver then attempted to run over the soldiers, injuring one. The soldiers fired warning shots in the air, then at the tires of the car before shooting at the driver, who had continued to refuse to stop, according to the spokesman.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
