WASHINGTON (JTA) — The U.S. House of Representatives unanimously passed a resolution commemorating the 15th anniversary of the Buenos Aires Jewish community center bombing.
The resolution condemning the July 18, 1994 attack on the AMIA center urges Argentina to continue to investigate the crime and expresses "grave concern" that the government of Saudi Arabi failed to detain Iranian officials for whom arrest warrants have been issued in connection with the bombing. The attack killed 85 people and wounded 300.
The legislation also urges Western governments to designate Hezbollah as a terrorist organization. The bill states that "extensive evidence links the planning of the attacks to the government of Iran and the execution of the attacks to Hezbollah."
"On the eve of the anniversary of the bombing of the Argentine Jewish Mutual Association (AMIA) in Buenos Aires, we remain committed to confronting the forces of hatred, extremism, and violence which were behind this attack," Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.), who authored the resolution, said in a statement. “Responsible nations must work together to help counter Iranian activities in the Hemisphere that pose a risk to our security, our interests and our democratic allies.”
