NEW YORK (JTA) — The four men arrested for plotting to blow up synagogues in New York City were indicted.
The men were arrested in an FBI sting operation after planting bombs in cars outside two synagogues in the Riverdale section of the Bronx; the bombs were fakes provided by an FBI informant. The men also had been planning to shoot down U.S. military aircraft using surface-to-air missiles.
The indictment unsealed Tuesday revealed new charges as well, including conspiracy and attempting to kill officers and employees of the United States. When the men were arrested last month, they were charged with conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction against the United States and conspiracy to acquire and use anti-aircraft missiles.
Three of the men, who all converted to Islam while serving jail time for other crimes, are U.S. citizens; the fourth is Haitian.
The men are scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in federal court.
