WASHINGTON (JTA) — Iran’s president says the country has increased its ability to enrich uranium.
"Now we have more than 7,000 centrifuges and the West dare not threaten us," Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told the government-run Islamic Republic News Agency, according to the Associated Press.
Ahmadinejad did not give a specific number of centrifuges, but his comments indicated that Iran has increased its uranium enrichment capacity from the 7,000 centrifuges he announced last month and the 6,000 he trumpeted in February.
Ahmadinejad has made the Iranian nuclear program a key part of his re-election campaign. Iranian elections will be held June 12.
