NEW YORK (JTA) — An Egyptian border guard was killed while patrolling the border with Israel, according to an Egyptian security official.
Magdi Abdellah Hamza was shot in his neck early Monday, the official told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he is not allowed to speak to the media. The official said an investigation is under way.
Security is tight along the border area where local Bedouins engage in drug, weapons and human trafficking.
Tensions have escalated in Egypt of late after its security forces arrested dozens of Hezbollah terrorists who allegedly were involved in smuggling weapons and planning attacks.
