(JTA) — A gunman killed 13 people at a community center in Binghamton, N.Y., including a Jewish ESL teacher.

Jiverly Voong, 41, entered the American Civic Association building in Binghamton on Friday and shot two receptionists before opening fire on a citizenship class. The dead included 12 students from around the world and teacher Roberta "Bobbie" King, 72.

Voong, 41, emigrated from Vietnam. He was reportedly laid off from his job at IBM a few weeks ago. He turned the gun on himself and committed suicide after the attack.
King was substituting for another teacher at the association the day of the attack.

"She was very interested in my ESL class and whenever I went away she was the first person I would want to come," Elizabeth Hayes, the class’ regular teacher, told the New York Daily News about King.

King is survived by 10 children and 17 grandchildren.
