NEW YORK (JTA) — Brandeis University received a $10.8 million grant to help support the school’s Russian student body.
The Genesis Philanthropy Group, which was started in 2007 by five Russian Jewish philanthropists, is making the five-year grant to the Massachusetts school. The grant will fund scholarships for 36 to 60 undergraduates, 14 master’s degree candidates, six doctoral candidates and 132 participants in Brandeis summer programs for high schoolers.
Last week, Genesis gave $4.8 million to the Foundation for Jewish Camp to help bring more Russian-speaking Jews to overnight summer camps.
“Genesis Philanthropy Group is committed to ensuring that Jewish culture, heritage and values are preserved among Russian-speaking Jews worldwide,” said Stan Polovets, one of the five founders of the foundation and its chief executive officer. “Our grant-making strategy is to find institutions that share our values and invest in their capacity to have maximum impact on our target population. We are delighted to partner with Brandeis University in launching this major initiative.”
Along with Polovets, the other founders are Mikhail Fridman, German Khan, Pyotr Aven and Alex Knaster.
