JERUSALEM (JTA) — Former Israeli President Moshe Katsav was indicted on rape and sexual assault charges.

Attorney General Menachem Mazuz. announced the indictment Thursday in Tel Aviv District Court. The charges also include sexual harassment and obstruction of justice.

The indictment covers incidents that occurred when Katsav served as president and as tourism minister.

Katsav was first accused in 2006 and stepped down as president shortly before his term ended in June 2007. He was replaced by Shimon Peres.

Katsav struck a plea deal in June 2007 under which the rape charges would be dropped, but last April he reneged.
