NEW YORK (JTA) — The umbrella organization of the Conservative movement’s day school system appointed a new board president.

Rabbi Laurence Scheindlin, the headmaster of the Sinai Akiba Academy in Los Angeles, was named to head the board of directors of the Solomon Schechter Day School Association.

Scheindlin, who has been the headmaster at Akba since 1977, has grown the school from 170 students to more than 500. He is the first head of school to hold the position of board president.

"His extensive experience and insights are already a tremendous asset to our organization and integral to achieving our strategic priorities of promoting educational excellence, increasing advocacy and promoting synergies with partner institutions," said Dr. Elaine Cohen, the Schechter day school association’s top professional and the associate director of the Department of Education at the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism.
