An interfaith effort highlighting the poverty issue concluded with a “call to action” on the steps of the U.S. Capitol.

“We pledge this is only the beginning,” said Rabbi Steve Gutow, the executive director of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, which along with Catholic Charities USA organized “Fighting Poverty with Faith: A Week of Action.”

The weeklong project, which ended Tuesday, coordinated philanthropic and social advocacy events in 96 communities across the United States.

“We will do our best to build our movement and to make ourselves as strong as possible,” Gutow said, adding in an interview that the project was just the first step in placing the issue on the national agenda.

U.S. Reps. John Sarbanes (D-Md.) and Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) joined numerous faith leaders at the event.
