Palestinians rioted at a terminal on the Gaza Strip’s southern border with Egypt.
Egypt, which has kept the Rafah border crossing mostly closed since Hamas took over Gaza a year ago, opened it Wednesday to allow across Palestinians seeking medical help and other humanitarian cases.
Dozens of young Palestinians gathered at the site to hold a rally demanding that the terminal remain open, eventually pelting Egyptian guards with rocks. The guards responded with water cannons. At least six people were hurt.
Hamas blew up the Rafah border wall in January, allowing hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to surge across and stock up on supplies. The incident strained ties between Egypt and the Islamist faction, prompting Cairo to step up security at the border.
Palestinians say they need Rafah opened to offset the economic duress caused by Israel’s closure of its border with Gaza.
