A two-state solution is the only way to achieve peace in the Middle East, Germany’s foreign minister said.
Frank-Walter Steinmeier, speaking Tuesday at the eighth annual European-Israeli Dialogue conference in Berlin, expressed hope for a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict but said the window of opportunity is closing.
Chief among his concerns are Israel’s settlement policies and the split in the Palestinian camp. But Germany remains committed to helping the parties achieve a stable peace through a two-state solution, he said.
The meeting, hosted since its inception by the Berlin-based Axel Springer Publishing company, brings together leaders from the worlds of politics, media and letters from Israel, Germany, France, Great Britain and the United States to discuss current issues in European-Israeli relations and the status of Mideast peace talks.
Axel Springer and the Club of Three, which was founded in the mid-1990s as a forum for discussion among Great Britain, Germany and France, initiated the dialogue.
Next week, Germany hosts an international conference designed to help Palestinian leaders improve policing and security. Representatives from more than 40 countries are expected in Berlin.
