A senior Israeli defense official said a truce between Israel and Hamas in Gaza is “likely” next week.
“The Egyptians are supposed to get back to us with answers in the coming days,” a senior defense official told the Jerusalem Post. “It is likely that the cease-fire will go into effect by the middle of next week.”
Israeli officials met in Cairo with Egyptian intelligence officials Thursday night after a day in which 50 rockets and mortars were fired at the Jewish state from the Gaza Strip.
Israel and Egypt have been attempting to negotiate the terms of a cease-fire. Mark Regev, a spokesman for Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert, said the current situation in Gaza is “unstable and not sustainable.”
