Ehud Olmert voiced hope that Lebanon would enter into peace talks with Israel.
“Just as Syria launched talks with us, I hope Lebanon will see fit to launch talks with us,” political sources
quoted the Israeli prime minister as telling his Cabinet on Tuesday.
Jerusalem and Damascus announced last month they were reviving negotiations that stalled in 2000, this
time with Turkish mediation.
After its 2006 offensive against Hezbollah, Israel called on the Western-backed Lebanese government to
enter peace talks. But the overture was rebuffed by Beirut, which is largely under Syria’s sway.
