Israel’s Ministry of Tourism will spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to attract French tourists.

The ministry launched an $880,000 advertising campaign aimed at both French Jews and non-Jews.

The ads will appear in newspapers and magazines, movie theaters and on the Internet.

Approximately 55 percent of the French Jewish community visits Israel annually, according to the Israeli business daily Globes. In addition, France sends more tourists to Israel than any other country in Europe. The number of French tourists rose by 4 percent for the first three months of 2008.

Still, there have been sharp increases in tourists from other European countries, according to Globes, including 92 percent from Spain, 66 percent from Italy and 62 percent from Germany.
