Palestinian Authority police clashed with Islamic Jihad gunmen in a key West Bank town.
Security forces which deployed in the Jenin area over the weekend as part of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’ security drive on Tuesday clashed with Islamic Jihad gunmen in Kabatiya, a town near the West Bank city.
Kabatiya is a stronghold of the Palestinian terrorist group.
At least one person, described in early reports as a bystander, was killed in the clashes, which signaled the difficulty Abbas may have in asserting his authority.
Jenin and several other West Bank areas are considered proving grounds for Abbas ahead of his bid to seal a deal with Israel on Palestinian statehood.
