President Bush named a three-star Air Force general to monitor Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.

Bush introduced Lt. Gen. William Fraser to the Palestinian and Israeli leaders during his visit to the region this week to spur renewed peace talks.

In November, the Bush administration committed the United States as the sole arbiter to implement the obligations of Bush’s 2003 “road map.” Under that peace plan, Palestinians must prevent terrorist attacks on Israel and Israel must freeze settlement building.

Fraser, an assistant to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will monitor progress. It is not clear to whom he will report and who will make the final calls.
