The delivery of a suspicious powder caused the evacuation of Israel’s embassy in Australia.
The embassy in Canberra was evacuated Wednesday after it received a package containing white powder, with concerns that the mission was being targeted in an anthrax attack. Police soon called off the security alert, however, after determining the powder was harmless.
The U.S. and British embassies in Canberra also received packages of powder.
“We acted according to protocol, Dor Shapira, a spokesman at the Israeli Embassy, told Israeli Army Radio. “The embassy was evacuated. Local police forces, as well as a biological and chemical specialist team, arrived at the scene.”
Australian authorities did not immediately name suspects in the apparent hoax.
