The European Union is expected to pressure Germany for refusing to extradite an alleged Nazi war criminal.
Denmark issued an arrest warrant for Soren Kam, a former SS member who is about 85 years old and living in Kempten, Germany. He allegedly was involved in the deportation of Danish Jews to concentration camps.
Franco Frattini, the E.U.’s European Commission vice president, reportedly plans to ask German Justice Minister Brigitte Zypries about the matter during this week’s council meeting.
Kam is No. 8 on the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s list of 10 most wanted Nazi war criminals.
Danish Justice Minister Lene Espersen reportedly said Kam may have used a stolen population register to identify 500 Danish Jews for deportation. He also allegedly was involved in the 1943 murder of anti-Nazi Danish newspaper editor Carl Henrik Clemmensen.
In February, the Wiesenthal Center criticized the Munich court’s refusal to hand over Kam. The appellate court explained that it rejected an extradition request from Denmark’s Justice Ministry because it did not have enough evidence in the case.
