Israel reportedly told the United States that the porous Egypt-Gaza Strip border threatened a planned peace conference.
“The smuggling of weapons and terrorist experts from Sinai to the Gaza Strip through the Philadelphi Route poses a real threat to the holding of the Annapolis conference,” said the message reported Friday by Ha’aretz.
The reference is to an Israeli-Palestinian peace conference to be held next month under U.S. auspices in the Maryland port city.
Israel has complained since its 2005 withdrawal from Gaza that Egypt is not doing enough to stop weapons smuggling.
