Hamas said one of its field commanders was abducted by Israeli special forces disguised as Hamas militiamen.
Mohawesh Kadi, a leader of Hamas’s armed wing and paramilitary police Executive Force, was snatched from his car outside the southern Gaza border town of Rafah on Friday night.
Kadi’s wife, who was with him at the time, said the assailants were Israeli commandos dressed in Executive Force uniforms. The Israeli military declined comment.
Israeli media said Kadi was believed to have been involved in the June 2006 abduction of Sergeant Gilad Shalit from an outpost on the Israeli border near Rafah.
