A Jewish woman was chosen to head a national women’s list in Moroccan parliamentary elections.
Maguy Kakon, a real estate consultant from Casablanca, would be the first Jewish woman elected to Morocco’s parliament her Social Centre Party prevails.
“I do admit that it is not easy for me to run for elections,” Kakon said, according to Al-Jazeera. “Not because I am Jewish but because I am a woman. Moroccan women, however, are present in all walks of life and I think I should give it a try.”
Kakon is not the first Jewish Moroccan to enter politics. When Morocco achieved independence in 1956, there were three Jewish members of parliament. Others have followed, and today Andre Azoulay, who is Jewish, is among King Mohammed’s senior advisers.
