Opponents of tenure for a Barnard College anthropology professor have launched a Web site to press their case.
The Web site, www.nadiaabuelhaj.com, includes critical reviews of “Facts on the Ground,” a deconstruction of Israeli archaeological practice by Nadia Abu El-Haj, and links to an online petition opposing her tenure application.
Barnard has confirmed only that Abu El-Haj is up for tenure, but speculation is rife that the college’s president already has signed off on tenure and sent the application to Columbia University, Barnard’s institutional parent, which much approve all tenure requests.
Abu El-Haj angered some in the pro-Israel community with a polarizing work arguing that Israeli archaeologists have been complicit in manufacturing history to bolster Israeli interests. A counter-petition has garnered some 1,100 signatures.
