Germany is reeling in the aftermath of an attack this week by 50 right-wing oriented German youths during a festival in the town of Muegeln/Bernau in the former East German state of Saxony.

Eight people of Indian background were seriously wounded in the attack.

The case has become a top news story around the country, with commentators asking whether this is a sign of increasing readiness to violence among right-wing youth. Local politicians have been quick to deny that neo-Nazis have any serious foothold in their town.

Two possible perpetrators, ages 21 and 23, were arrested and released on their own recognizance.

Although authorities said they are not sure whether this was a bias crime, witnesses reported hearing xenophobic chants, including “Foreigners out,” during the attack, which took place Sunday night. Some of the victims appeared on television, their stitches and black eyes clearly visible. According to reports, there were many witnesses but none who tried to help during the incident. And, apparently, none who are willing to cooperate with police.
