Israel has begun equipping its main battle tanks with a locally made anti-grenade system.

The Merkava-IV tanks are being outfitted with Trophy, which detects incoming rocket-propelled grenades or heavier anti-tank missiles, and fires a projectile that destroys them in midair, security sources said Thursday.

The overhaul was approved after dozens of Israeli tanks were destroyed or disabled by Hezbollah rocket crews during last year’s Lebanon war.

Trophy, which is made by the Israeli arms firm Rafael and costs approximately $300,000 per unit, is also being considered by the United States for its forces in Iraq.
