The Central Council of Jews in Germany criticized the German government for considering reducing funds for memorials at sites significant to the Holocaust.
Solomon Korn, a vice president of Council, said this week he was “disappointed” by the proposal by Bernd Neumann, Minister of State for Culture, to freeze federal contributions for preserving “authentic” sites. Naumann submitted cost-cutting suggestions for consideration by the German Parliament. which will vote after its summer break.
Korn said it was important to increase funding not only for memorials such as the one in Berlin, but also for authentic sites, such as memorials at concentration camps, where infrastructure needs constant upkeep.
