The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation announced its largest 20 grants for 2007.The largest of the $48 million in grants was one for $13.6 million to the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee for projects in Argentina, the former Soviet Union, Turkey and India. The Baltimore-based foundation also gave $8 million to the United Jewish Communities for projects in Israel, Ethiopia and the FSU, and $4.3 million to CHAI: Comprehensive Housing Assistance Inc., to build low-income housing for the elderly in Baltimore. The foundation has some $2 billion in assets and distributes more than $100 million a year, making it the largest Jewish private foundation, although some say the new Adelson Family Charitable Foundation could give away as much as $250 million per year to Jewish causes.
