Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations said recent events in the Middle East are signs of Hamas weakness.Dan Gillerman, in comments Monday to a forum organized by the Israel Project, a pro-Israel NGO, said Hamas’ willingness to enter a unity government with Fatah vindicated Israel’s policy of isolating the terrorist group. “I really think that what we’re seeing today is a weak Hamas,” Gillerman said. Since Tuesday, Hamas has resumed firing rockets from the Gaza Strip at civilian areas in southern Israel, with the Negev city of Sderot suffering the worst of the bombardment. Gillerman defended his government’s decision to withdraw from the Gaza Strip in 2005, which some warned would lead precisely to the situation today.”Israel stands behind the fact that a withdrawal from Gaza was the right thing to do in spite of the consequences we see today,” Gillerman said.
