The Republican Jewish Coalition launched an ad campaign praising Sen. Joe Lieberman for accusing colleagues of disliking the Bush administration more than Islamist terrorists. “There is something profoundly wrong when opposition to the war in Iraq seems to inspire greater passion than opposition to Islamist extremism,” Lieberman, a Connecticut Independent, said at the annual American Israel Public Affairs Committee policy conference in Washington earlier this month. “This wrong-headed thinking about the world is happening because we’re in a political climate where, for many people, when George Bush says yes, their reflex reaction is to say no.” These quotes and others were juxtaposed against a large figure of Lieberman in advertisements, which will run in Jewish newspapers. “Our national security should not be a political football,” said RJC Executive Director Matthew Brooks. “We appreciate Senator Lieberman speaking out so eloquently against those who wish to undermine this effort and weaken our national resolve.” The RJC routinely attacked Lieberman as soft on Israel when he was the Democratic vice presidential candidate in 2000. Lieberman won re-election as an independent last year after losing the Democratic primary to an antiwar candidate.
