A “common agenda” is needed to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Condoleezza Rice said after meeting with Mahmoud Abbas. The U.S. secretary of state said in a joint news conference with the Palestinian Authority president Sunday in Ramallah that immediate results could not be expected. “You need to prepare the ground well, you need to
spend time with the parties. You need to understand what is tolerable
[for] each side,” The Associated Press quoted Rice as saying. Rice was scheduled to meet afterward with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, whose Cabinet voted last week to cut off contacts with the newly formed P.A. unity government until it renounces terrorism and recognizes the Jewish state.
