The European Jewish Congress is considering a resolution threatening to pull out of the World Jewish Congress, according to an EJC memorandum obtained by JTA. The move comes in the wake of last week’s dismissal of longtime WJC official Rabbi Israel Singer. Among the demands in the EJC draft resolution is that a planned June meeting of the WJC governing board in Brussels address specific grievances, mostly related to the decision-making process of the organization. The EJC is holding a conference call among its 20 executive board members Tuesday to consider the resolution and decide how best to respond to Singer’s dismissal.WJC Secretary-General Stephen Herbits said the demands had not been shared with him. “People are objecting to the process, and they can express those views,” he said, adding that the governing board meeting in Brussels was announced a long time ago. The decision to dismiss Singer was not something WJC President Edgar Bronfman wanted to do, Herbits said. “The integrity of the organization was at stake; its viability was at stake. You have to do what’s right.”
