The Simon Wiesenthal Center called on Ukrainian President Victor Yuschenko to investigate recent acts of anti-Semitic vandalism in Ukraine and punish
those responsible. “Silence just stimulates further violence and not only against Jews,” Wiesenthal Center official Shimon Samuels wrote Yuschenko. “It
poses a threat to democracy in Ukraine.”
In the past several weeks Holocaust memorials in Kiev, Odessa, Berdichev
and Alexandria in central Ukraine were vandalized. Last
month, vandals desecrated a Jewish cemetery in Odessa.
