Confronting Iran requires victory in Iraq, U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney told AIPAC’s annual policy conference. Cheney, addressing nearly 6,000 delegates at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee plenum in Washington on Monday, appealed for support for the Bush administration’s policies in Iraq. “It is simply not consistent for anyone to demand aggressive action against the threat that is posed by the Iranian regime while at the same time acquiescing in a retreat from Iraq,” Cheney said to mild applause.A central plank of this year’s conference is strong bipartisan support for tightening sanctions against Iran. Opposition to the Iraq war runs high among Jewish voters and a number of the Democratic Party speakers at this year’s conference are among the most vocal opponents of the war.
