Israeli soldiers killed at least one Palestinian during a major West Bank sweep. Israeli troops and tanks swept into Nablus on Sunday on a scale not seen in years, a mission that military sources said aimed to capture a terrorist cell planning major attacks on Israel. Military sources said troops scouring Nablus’ Old City for wanted Palestinian terrorists shot a gunman Monday who fired at them. The gunman’s condition was not immediately known, but Palestinian residents said an unarmed 60-year-old man had been killed by Israeli fire. Several confrontations also took place between soldiers and stone-throwing youths. The sweep has led to several arrests, as well as the discovery of weapons caches.
