JERUSALEM, July 8 (JTA) — Following is a timeline of some key developments that have affected the West Bank and Gaza Strip from the Six-Day War to the present: June 5, 1967 — The Six-Day War begins. June 7, 1967 — Israeli forces conquer eastern Jerusalem and most of the West Bank. April 1968 — First Jewish settlement is established in Hebron. Dec. 9, 1987— The intifada, the Palestinian uprising, breaks out. July 31, 1988 — King Hussein announces that Jordan is renouncing all claims to the West Bank. Nov. 15, 1988 — The Palestine National Council, meeting in Algiers, issues a declaration of independence for the state of Palestine. Oct. 30, 1991 — The Madrid Peace Conference begins with a Palestinian delegation in attendance. Sept. 13, 1993 — The Oslo peace process is formally launched with the signing of the Declaration of Principles by Yasser Arafat and Yitzhak Rabin on the White House lawn. May 4, 1994 — Israel and the Palestinians sign the Cairo Agreement, which calls for Israeli withdrawals from the Gaza Strip and Jericho. May 13, 1994 — The Palestinians take control of Jericho. May 18, 1994 — Israel evacuates its last installation in Gaza City after a transfer ceremony the day before. July 1, 1994 — Returning from exile in Tunis, Arafat crosses from Egypt into the Gaza Strip. Sept. 28, 1995 — Israel and the Palestinians sign the Interim Agreement, which calls for Israel to withdraw from six cities in the West Bank: Jenin, Nablus, Tulkarm, Kalkilya, Ramallah and Bethlehem. Dec. 27, 1995 — Israel completes its withdrawal from Ramallah. In previous months, Israel withdrew from Jenin, Nablus, Tulkarm, Kalkilya and Bethlehem. Jan. 17, 1997 — Israeli troops redeploy in the pre-dawn hours from 80 percent of Hebron. The Palestinian Authority now has control over all the major Palestinian population centers in the West Bank. July 25, 2000 — Camp David summit hosted by President Clinton ends in failure. Sept. 28, 2000 — The Al-Aksa Intifada begins. March 29, 2002 — Israel launches Operation Protective Wall, a massive anti-terror military campaign in the West Bank, following a series of unanswered Palestinian terror attacks. June 16, 2002 — Israel launches construction of a fence along the seamline with the West Bank aimed at preventing Palestinian terrorists from entering Israel. June 19, 2002 — Israel announces it will seize Palestinian-ruled territory in response to terror attacks. June 21, 2002 — Israel launches a new military operation in the West Bank after Palestinian suicide bombers strike twice in Jerusalem, killing 26 Israelis and injuring more than 120 others. Meeting with less Palestinian resistance than during Operation Protective Wall, Israeli troops assume control of nearly all the major West Bank population centers.
