JERUSALEM, Feb. 23 (JTA) —

Foreign Minister David Levy is to visit Japan and China this week, in

official trips aimed at reinforcing ties between the two countries.The trip to China marks five years since full diplomatic relations were established between the Jerusalem and Beijing. During his talks in China, which will take place following Tuesday’s funeral of the late Deng Xiaoping, Foreign Minister Levy will meet with President Jiang Zemin and Prime Minister Li Peng. He will also hold a series meetings with Chinese Foreign Minister Qian Qichen. The two men are due to sign a cooperation agreement between the Israeli and Chinese foreign ministries and exchange letters which will assure the status of the Israeli Consulate-General in Hong Kong after it reverts to Chinese control this coming July. In Tokyo, Levy is scheduled to meet with his Japanese counterpart, Rukihiko Ikeda and Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto. While in Japan, Foreign Minister Levy will address the Federation of Economic Organizations.
