MOSCOW, Jan. 20 (JTA) — A monument to one of the most famous Yiddish writers has been unveiled in Kiev. The 10-foot monument to Sholem Aleichem was erected in the downtown section of the city — next to the house in which the writer lived during the turn of the century. Renovations have begun on the house, which is slated to become a Sholem Aleichem museum. A dedication ceremony for the monument was attended by Jewish and Ukrainian dignitaries, including the city’s mayor. Sholem Aleichem spent much of his life in the Ukrainian capital, which he called by the fictitious name of “Yehupetz” in his writings.
