The virtually unanimous resolution in the New York State Assembly the other day opposing Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) efforts against Israel is a reminder of the fair-mindedness of our elected leaders. It also serves as a rejoinder to Las Vegas billionaire Sheldon Adelson, who sponsored a private anti-BDS summit meeting several weeks ago that excluded key mainstream Jewish groups in the fight against de-legitimization of Israel.
In addition to Assemblyman Walter Mosley of Brooklyn’s 57th District, who sponsored the bill, it was just such a mainstream group — the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York (JCRC) — that played a key role in ensuring its passage. An official bill is expected.
Indeed, it is groups like the JCRC that work on a daily basis, and often behind the scenes, in building relationships with community and campus leaders here and around the country, making Israel’s case.
Let’s hope Adelson’s conservative political agenda does not take precedence over his financial support for pro-Israel efforts — from all segments of our community.
