Preparations for Rosh HaShanah began, in a hands-on way, in Lawrence, L.I., last week.
At the Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway, more than 220 students took part in a shofar-making workshop.
The nursery-to-fourth-grade children learned about the history, philosophy and manufacturing process of the shofar during the event run at the school for nearly a decade by the Chabad-Lubavitch Tzivos Hashem youth movement. The fourth-graders got to make their own shofars, sawing and sanding and shellacking the horns they took home for the High Holy Days.
“Working with actual shofars allows students to grasp the concepts on a deeper level,” says Leslie Gang, HAFTR’s director of admissions and communications.
After the workshop, the halls were filled with the sounds of the newly created shofars being played.
Hands-on Judaism continues at the school this week — on Wednesday, some students will participate in a Tzivos Hashem lulav workshop, and other will make their own lulav.
