Allegations in an upcoming book that Israel’s secret intelligence agency taped sultry phone sex between President Clinton and Monica Lewinsky are “too contrived” to be true, the director of the Anti-Defamation League says.
“The timing is too superb, tying it in with Monica’s book,” said Abraham Foxman. Both the forthcoming “Gideon’s Spies,” by Gordon Thomas — an alleged history of the Mossad’s secret operations — and Lewinsky’s account of her affair with the president are to be published this month by St. Martin’s Press.
According to the Thomas book, the Mossad used the explicit conversations to blackmail the president into aborting an FBI search for a top Israeli spy in the White House. Known as MEGA, the agent is rumored to be a top official who may have controlled convicted spy Jonathan Pollard.
During Lewinsky’s testimony before the Starr Commission, she alluded to comments by Clinton that he feared an unnamed foreign embassy was taping their calls. The Israeli consulate here declined to comment.
