The 92nd Street Y is launching a Hebrew-immersion, Israeli-themed day camp this summer.

Camp Bereisheet, offered in partnership with a Bergen County, N.J., after-school program for Israelis, will be located in Rockland County. The co-ed camp, for children entering grades K-5, will offer arts and crafts, swimming, archery and other activities with lessons about Israeli geography and Israel-themed activities, like cooking in a Tabun (traditional Middle Eastern) oven. All campers must be proficient in Hebrew.

The camp is one of a few new Hebrew-language day camps in the New York area. Last summer in Brooklyn, the Kings Bay Y at Windsor Terrace and Congregation Beth Elohim piloted a dual-language Hebrew summer camp staffed entirely by native Hebrew speakers, and the Hannah Senesh Community Day School piloted a Hebrew-immersion day camp staffed by its teachers. Both programs are continuing this summer.

Camp Bereisheet is an outgrowth of 92nd Street Y’s six-year-old “Israeliness” initiative, which serves Israeli adults and families in New York through programs such as Israeli Culture After-School, Shira B’Tzibur (Israeli singing evenings), and an Israeli book club. All programs are conducted in Hebrew and celebrate both Jewish and Israeli culture.
