Does any shul still need to be called Young Israel? (“Young Israel Movement In Turmoil Over Upstate Shul,” July 2).
National Council of Young Israel (NCYI) takes a large percentage of branch dues, but what do they give in return? Synagogues in the Orthodox Union pay a flat membership fee considerably less than what a Young Israel shul pays, yet the services provided by the OU are the same and in some cases better. In these tough economic times is it really worth sending thousands of dollars out of the community just for use of a name that no longer stands for what it once did?
