No Women Presidents

It is time for the National Council of Young Israel (NCYI) to reverse its policy of no women presidents (“Young Israel Movement In Turmoil Over Upstate Shul,” July 2).

The policy is not supported by the Rabbinical Council of America or the Orthodox Union and has not even been followed by some of its own member synagogues that have elected female presidents. Most Modern Orthodox leaders have come to realize that the Orthodox community is immeasurably strengthened when all members, both women and men, are fully involved and engaged as members and leaders. We hope that the NCYI changes its divisive policy in order to ensure that all synagogues are able to avail themselves of the best leadership, regardless of gender.
