Mark Charendoff presents very cogent arguments in favor of term limits for the leaders of Jewish communal organizations (“The Case For Term Limits In Jewish Life,” Opinion, Sept. 10).
In his very persuasive article, Charendoff traces the origins back to ancient Greece. I submit that the history of term limits can be traced even further back to the Book of Genesis. Before the Flood and the Tower of Babel, when people became too comfortable and ensconced in their long lives, the world became corrupt. After God saw that it was no good for the world he created, he established term limits and the years of their lives on earth were shortened. That made it possible for new leadership, under Abraham, to bring goodness back to the world.
