Although I am not excusing an act of violence by Jewish youths in Israel, I do think that such actions should be viewed in their proper perspective (“Attack On Arab Youth Seen As ‘Wake-up Call,” Aug. 24).
If the identical set of facts had occurred in an Arab country, albeit with a Jewish victim, this story would have never been reported by The New York Times or any other major news outlet. Jews attacking Arabs in Israel, or anywhere else for that matter, is the classic “man bites dog” story. It rarely happens and that is why it is deemed newsworthy. Other than these random acts of violence, which should be condemned, Israeli Arabs and Jews have been
peacefully coexisting for years. And that is the real story that should be reported.
