If Israel wishes to adhere to democratic principles, it is not enough to condemn the young Israelis who viciously attacked an Arab youth (“Making Coexistence A Priority” and “Attack On Arab Youth Seen As ‘Wake-up Call,” Aug. 24).
It is necessary also to condemn the many bystanders, presumably many adults, who stood by and did not intervene. This is totally unacceptable, and failure to do so will not serve Israel’ best interests. Government apathy and public apathy are bigotry’s best friends.
