Students looking to make Hillel bend to their own thinking call themselves activist (“Chipping Away At Israel’s Legitimacy,” Editorial, Dec. 20).
Zev Jabotinsky and Harriet Tubman were activists. The students in question are thinking only of their wants, not those of Jewish peoplehood.
Hillel is an all-inclusive, non-denominational group with members on both left and right. Debate is the cornerstone in Jewish learning, both religious and secular. However, the “activists” are both foolish and naive to expect a pro-Israel group to pay for speakers who do not think Israel should exist.
They do not understand what Israel means. Open debate, yes. Suicide, no!
