It is heartening and appropriate to “call a spade a spade” as Gary Rosenblatt did in his column, “New York Times Parallels Are Forced, And False” (July 18).
Frankly, the Times’ self-righteousness is not only false but hypocritical.
One has but to cite American military behaviors in such instances as dropping atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing at least 150,000 people on those two days alone. America utilized those bombs instead of launching a full-scale land war in the Japanese homelands, which would have resulted, it was thought, in an American soldier death rate in the thousands. Instead, it was decided that the deaths of possibly many hundreds of thousands of Japanese was acceptable.
America is not a land of saints, and neither is Israel. It is the height of cynical dissembling for The New York Times, and anyone else, to pretend to perfection and virtue regarding other nations who find themselves embattled and attacked by those who want nothing less than to destroy them — which is Hamas’s stated objective in no uncertain terms.
