Congratulations, you hit the nail on the head with that [page 1] headline, “Cease-Fire Hinges On Strength Of Abbas” (Aug. 29).
The ink was not even dry when the Israeli government announced it was annexing almost 1,000 acres of more land in the West Bank. [Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud] Abbas is not strengthened by that move; he is further undercut.
Whatever chance there might have been to strengthen Abbas and make West Bank progress, after all that killing on both sides over most of this summer, was destroyed by the Israeli government. Can’t that government do anything positive to try to achieve peace?
