Although Jonathan Mark’s article about informal donations to the IDF during the Gaza War was a critique, it brought a smile to my face (“Buddy, Can You Spare Some Socks?” Aug. 29).
It is absolutely incredible how Jews felt so connected to the soldiers that they organized their own campaigns to provide the soldiers with what they thought was needed. They felt as if these soldiers were their own sons or brothers. It brought to mind the poignant words of Rabbi Yitzchok Dovid Grossman of Migdal Ohr, who, when referring to the operation in June to rescue the kidnapped yeshiva boys said, “Everybody has a feeling that he lost his son. He is looking for his son to find him.” It was a terrifying and very difficult summer for the Jewish people, but it was also a summer of unprecedented love and unity.
